What if my child must be absent from school?

School attendance is important for your child's academic achievement. We only excuse absences for necessary and important reasons such as illness, bereavement, family emergencies, and observance of religious holidays. If your child must be absent, please call the school on or before the day of the absence to advise us about the absence and the reason for the absence. If parents do not have access to a phone, we also accept a signed note from the parent once the student returns to school.

Are cell phones and other electronic devices allowed on campus?

We do not allow any electronic devices at school such as cell phones or hand-held games. We do allow one exception to this rule: students may bring cell phones or other electronic devices to school and leave them in their locker on the same day they will be participating in a school field trip or sports team away game.

Can I drop my child off at school?

Parents also have the option to drop off and pick up their child at school. To keep our drop-off and pick-up area safe, we ask that parents observe the following rules:

  • Drive under five (5) miles per hour in front of the school.
  • Stay in the car while waiting to pick up your child in the drop-off/pick-up lane.
  • Stay in your lane, and do not pass cars that are loading or unloading children.
  • Students may only walk to cars in the drop-off/pick-up lane. If you park on the street, you must get out of the car and come get your child.
  • If you need to come into the school, please park your car in the lot across the street.

What is the school dress code?

At Santa Cruz, we believe individualism is important, but we also work to protect the school learning environment as well as the health and safety of our students. We enforce our dress code during school and school-sponsored activities. We require students to follow these guidelines:

  • We do not allow hats on campus.
  • Shirts must have finished necklines and sleeves. We don't allow backless, midriff-baring, transparent shirts, or shirts that show undergarments.
  • We prohibit all apparel depicting alcohol, drugs, gangs, tobacco, sex, guns or weapons, political statements, or any illegal acts.
  • Students must wear pants at the waist and that are no more than two inches larger than a student's actual waist size and with no undergarments showing. Shorts must be as long as the student's longest fingertip when arms are relaxed.
  • Dresses and skirts must be as long as the longest fingertip when arms and shoulders are in a relaxed position. We do not allow backless, midriff-baring, or transparent dresses, or dresses that show undergarments.
  • Students must wear shoes at all times, and we prohibit slippers, stocking feet, flip-flops, shower shoes, thongs, or metal cleats on shoes.
  • We do not allow pajamas at school except on special days determined by the administration.
  • Students must tuck belts into belt loops, and the belt must not hang down more than six inches below the buckle.
